Massage; is a natural treatment method that provides physical and mental renewal, by the skin, sub dermal tissue, muscles, internal organs, and by providing the circulatory and lymphatic system to work effectively again with various manipulations. During the massage because the circulatory system works faster, the blood and lymphatic fluids transportation is eased down and provides the heart to rest. When the nervous and endocrine (hormonal) system is triggered, it helps the entire body system to work healthily. At the time of the massage, the body that produces endorphin that is more effective than morphine and is a natural drug is excreted. Due to this hormone, the person receiving the massage is being provided with a huge relaxation and at the same time the person is receiving a psychological therapy.

A massage is as old as the history of humanity. In the Ancient Chinese, Indian, Egyptian and Greek imprints, it writes that a massage is used to prevent and cure sicknesses. The base of Therapeutic massage is grounded to the year of 2300 B.C, which is based on the traditional Chinese medicine. In the Ancient Chinese schools they would allow a wide study of massage and acupuncture together with herbal medicine. In India, they have always given a huge value to massage. The mothers would massage their children, and then they would teach these children to do the same to their mothers and fathers. A massage history spreads all the way to 1800 B.C and is a Indian medicine system called Ayurvedic, it is a part of therapy methods.  In the Ancient Greek and Rome antiquities, countless references to a massage were found. Hippocrates, which is counted as the father of medicine, has mentioned massage and exercises and has mentioned that all the individuals working in the health field must be aware of the massage techniques. It is comparatively new for us using the word massage and this is derived from the word masah, which comes from the Arabic meaning of patting with the hand.

The classic massage became popular again in USA in the mid 1800 years. After that with the effect of the Swedish Per Henry Ling (1776-1839) the demand of massage had increased in Europe and the Swedish massage system had spread across Europe. Ling gave great importance to medical gymnastics and to massage; he categorized the movements as patting (effleurage), pressure (pressing), rubbing (friction), shaking (vibration), kneading (Petri sage) and hitting (percussion). The royal family awarded his work and an institution was established under his name in Stockholm. Albert Hoffa published the book “Technik Der Massage” that is still seen as a basic work between the massage books, in 1900. During World War 1, massage was commonly used in the therapy of mental damage and neurology. In the year of 1996 at the Atlanta Summer Olympics, massage was accepted in a medical sense for the first time.

In our day, the interest in health has become an indispensable part of natural therapy. For the relief of stress in the working life, to help modern medicine, to provide the body to take herbal medicine oils, to keep people doing sport fit, to provide tourists on vacation spending time in Spa’s to relax physically and mentally and maybe the most important to increase the body immunity towards sicknesses has become an important element in the wellness culture.

Shiatsu

The shiatsu massage’s foundation is based on Acupuncture and is a Japanese origin from the Far East. It is done with light clothing or with no clothing and without oil. It is a massage done with the aim of relaxing or healing (Zen) with different pressure and elasticity techniques to the acupressure points and meridians.  Shiatsu which is formed from the words  shi meaning ‘finger’ and atsu meaning ‘pressure’ in Japanese , is a massage technique  applied with the finger and inside of the palm. All of nature’s creatures are in a compatible Yin (feminine energy) Yang (masculine energy) balance. Shiatsu organizes all the opposite energies found in the body by activating them. This way it produces an energy balance in the body and helps the person gain their health (natural self). According to the eastern medicine, not only the body’s inside balance and the body’s balance with the outside world become corrupted opening sicknesses, but it affects the person’s social relations with its surrounding in a negative way. These type of imbalances causes sicknesses and the inside organs to corrupt, and causes the person to be restless, unhappy or to be depressed.

There are in total 299 points found inside the human body. These are according to the Chinese teaching acupuncture, and according to the Indian teaching chakra. As for these points they are found on what’s called the meridian (or nadi) on the channels that the bioenergy moves around. 6 are on the arms, and 6 on the legs (the extension are on the body and head), one of them is on the body and the last one spreads right in the middle of the back. Half of these are Yin as in feminine and the other half Yang as in masculine. The last two are neutral.

Shiatsu is applied with the fingers and inside of the palms on the body’s acupuncture points by giving pressure. The procedure that the needles do in acupuncture, the fingers do in the shiatsu massage. Shiatsu is a method that can be done over clothing if desired. It is beneficial of the therapist to have a deep knowledge of anatomy and to be experienced if they want to heal with this method.

Thai

The main base of Thai massage which has a past of 2.500 years comes from Indian Yoga and China’s traditional medicine. By working from the meridians that are the energy channels, it increases the agitation coming about from the muscles and joints and it increases flexibility. It is done dressed on a half-hard ground. It is also know as passive yoga. Because majority of the movements are being done slowly it takes at least 90 minutes. The Thai massage, is an application aimed at treating the human health in every way by the far East philosophy and in the light of its knowledge.

In our day most of the manipulations applied by the physiotherapist are originated from the Thai massage. It is a very effective massage type that helps removes joint and muscle problems, and physical sicknesses that came out later on. The traditional Thai massage takes close to 3 hours and by the end of the session the patient feels renewed and fresh. The Thai massage is based on relaxation, peace, calmness, aliveness, freeness, renewal, relief, deep rest, power gain, compassion, love and respect for both the therapist and the person receiving the massage.

This massage that is formed by the colorful mixtures of Acupressure, Shiatsu and Yoga asanas, is a  blend of flexibility, point pressure and soft cycles.  This Thai massage that feeds our physical body, our energy lines and our heart is also known as active meditation. Even though the Thai massage was traditionally developed  from within Thailand, every leader teacher has created their own style in this massage. There are North, South, Middle and northeast styles. The North style is a fair sum dynamic and is “Yang” flexibility is dense. The South style is more “Yin” and finger movements are denser. It is applied from the feet towards the head.

This is a type of massage that is applied by decreasing the agitation in the muscles and to provide a general loosening, and to fasten the circulation by applying different types of manipulations from the periphery to the centre that leads to the heart with massage oils on the skin surface. When it is done lightly is it called a “Relax massage” and when it is done with more pressure, it is called a “Swedish massage”. Whereas in the Sports massage the percussion manipulation in the Swedish massage is used more often. For the muscle and tissues to continue their normal activity they need energy. The food we eat is burned because of the oxygen we take from the air and when it is separated into little parts it produces biochemical energy called ATP ( Adenine tri-phosphate).  Although in the mean time, a lot of side products like lactic acid, fatty acids, amino acids, carbondyoxide and free radicals come out as well. With the storage of these in the muscle and tissues biochemical tiredness will be sensible. This will reduce our working performance and joy of life. Massage, increases the blood and lymph fluids flow and stimulates the nervous ends under the skin and livens the muscle and tissues, this helps the individual to be fresher and calm.

It is a type of massage that is applied with a low tempo with deep pressure on to the muscle and tissues based on anatomic and physiologic rules in situations like, chronic pains, muscle agitation, restriction on movement capability, and fibromyalgia. Even if the deep pressures give some pain at first, with regular sessions it provides the connective tissue and what the crowd calls colic’s hardening of the fibrosis to open and the hardening of the joint ligaments that is known as arthritis helps osteoarthritis diseases decrease or  infect by making it to go away. Generally the vertebral (spine) which is the most common place for agitation to be seen and the scapulars (shoulder blade) areas mainly apply local pressure.
